Barkin’Soul, aka Misha Laurent is a music lover, with a feel for all styles as long as they are well written and produced. Though his true passion lays in music of the African diaspora, which you can sense throughout his compositions.
Blending his feel for the old and new , he doesn’t try to reproduce an era but inspires himself and picks the best bits to create an authentic sound.
Having a hip hop background he samples his own live recorded hits and breaks, & one by one adds the instruments he feels and hears in his head.
Once the song has taken shape he then either plays the instruments himself or hires local musicians to lay the goods. Barkin’Soul rarely sings lead on his pieces, he rather invites vocalists along that he feel suite the vibe and style of the song. Instead, Misha adds little harmonies, background vocals and choruses as well as writes all the horn parts.
Barkin’Soul has also produced the debut album of Kafka between 2005 and 2008, and has held a 5 year Djing residency at the Brisbane award winning Cocktail bar called “the Bowery” located in the heart of Bribane's Fortitude Valley and Saturday at the Newly opened “Skyroom” . Misha Laurent was also behind the very successful "Deep Funk in the Forest" event, located in upper Main Arm where a regular 350 punters see him spin with the likes of Keb Darge. He also performed at The 2006 Big Day Out, and supported acts such as "The Quantic Soul Orchestra" and "Alice Russell", "The Breakestra","jazzanova", "Keb Darge”, "Young Einstein from Ugly Ducklings", “Russ Dewbury” and “Alex Bark from Jazzanova.
